South Florida Cultural Consortium: 2019 Visual & Media Artists Exhibition
Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami
Curated by Amy Galpin
For the 2019 South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC) exhibition, I developed a full visual system built around the consortium’s newly updated logo. While the new mark was minimal in form, I leaned into its simplicity by using it at monumental scale—anchoring the wall text, banner design, and a 40-page exhibition catalog with bold, unmistakable presence.
This iteration of SFCC was one of the most ambitious to date, showcasing thirteen South Florida artists and supported by one of the largest government-funded artist grant programs in the country. The budget for this edition allowed for a fully produced, full-bleed printed catalog. Each artist was given a full spread to present their work, many of which were laid out as immersive edge-to-edge image environments.
One artist, however, preferred their contribution to remain conceptually blank. To ensure viewers understood this decision as intentional—and not a production error—I incorporated a small page number and a discreet star, framing the gesture as part of the book’s logic and tone. The result honored the artist’s request while maintaining the catalog’s visual integrity.
The design language throughout the project remained sharp, modern, and typography-forward—aligning with the updated SFCC identity and amplifying the distinct voices of each artist featured. The exhibition was curated by Amy Galpin, Chief Curator of the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, and marked another major milestone in MOCA’s ongoing partnership with the SFCC.
