How to Unlock a Portal

Jacob Felländer | Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami
Curated by Artyard

This immersive exhibition followed artist Jacob Felländer’s decade-long evolution from analog photography to virtual reality installations. The visual language of How to Unlock a Portal explores time as a layered and non-linear phenomenon, a concept I echoed throughout the exhibition materials.

I designed an extensive gallery guide shaped like a panoramic timeline, culminating in a large fold-out panel featuring one of Felländer’s expansive photographic landscapes. The printed piece invited viewers to physically unfold the experience of warped time and perspective — echoing the very essence of the exhibition.

While the artist brought his own wordmark, I was invited to illustrate a figure wearing VR goggles — a nod to the viewer’s role in traversing the immersive world he built. The exhibition wall text played with temporal themes through pacing and layout, referencing time travel, archaeological drift, and Cubist fragmentation.

This project allowed me to merge technical precision with conceptual design — where identity, chronology, and virtual embodiment converged into a multi-format storytelling experience.
