Carlos Salas: Latin America and the Global Imagination
Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami
December 2, 2015 – February 28, 2016
Curator: Rina Carvajal
For this exhibition, I developed a comprehensive visual identity encompassing the exhibition logo, wall text, gallery guide, outdoor banner, movie poster, and a bespoke 3D VIP package for Art Basel Miami Beach. The latter received the 2016 Florida Print Award for Best of Category, recognizing excellence in design and production.
The exhibition featured 60 large-scale abstract paintings by Colombian artist Carlos Salas, whose work is characterized by layered brushwork and etched markings that evoke a sense of depth and introspection. To reflect this, I designed the exhibition logo with a custom descender on the “A” in “Salas,” mirroring the etched lines prominent in his canvases. This subtle typographic detail served as a nod to the artist's distinctive mark-making.
The overall design approach was minimalist, allowing Salas's vibrant and textured artworks to take center stage. The gallery guide and wall texts were formatted to provide clarity and coherence, enhancing the viewer's engagement with the exhibition. The outdoor banner and movie poster extended the exhibition's presence beyond the museum walls, capturing the essence of Salas's work and inviting a broader audience to explore the exhibition.
